Teach Your Students about Education Inequality with this Free Classroom Curriculum

Hi teacher friends,

March is one of my favorite months because it's Women's History Month and includes International Women's Day on March 8 to celebrate girls and women. In addition to focusing on incredible women who have moved mountains across the world, it's important to teach children about the gender inequality that still exists. One way I do this with my 2nd graders is by teaching them statistics about girls' education inequality.

When I learned the stats about girls' education, I knew I had to help create positive change! In college I started a campus chapter of She's the First (an organization that sponsors girls' education through scholarships in low-income nations) to make college students aware of education inequality. When I became an elementary school teacher, I helped design a free, Common Core-aligned classroom curriculum to teach kids about global education. Each year we learn about 10 countries where She's the First has partner schools and then we hold student-led fundraisers to sponsor a girl's education.

Throughout the curriculum, your students will:

  • Go on virtual field trips via Google Earth to visit schools around the world where girls aren't given the same opportunity as boys to go to school. (You'll visit 10 countries where She's the First sponsors girls).
  • Participate in shared reading, watch empowering videos, and engage in rich discussions
  • Keep track of their travels with free printable passports, boarding passes, and travel journals
  • Receive printable Recipe Books for each country
